Homs Comes Back to Life After Years of Devastation
Homs, Syria
— The city of Homs is gradually returning to normal life after years of
destruction, following the fall of the Assad regime and ongoing security
operations by the Public Security Forces to track down its remnants —
particularly those involved in crimes against civilians or those who refused to
regularize their status and surrender their weapons.
Commercial Activity Returns Despite the Ruins
Local markets in Homs have begun
to witness a noticeable rise in commercial activity, even in the old
neighborhoods still overshadowed by widespread destruction. Shops are
reopening, and residents are slowly returning to the daily rhythms that once
defined the city.
Removal of a Notorious Regime Checkpoint
Al Jazeera Net
observed the Homs Municipality removing one of the most infamous regime
checkpoints at the city’s entrance — a checkpoint previously controlled by the
Air Force Intelligence branch, known for its brutality and the dozens of
arbitrary arrests carried out against civilians.
The removal of this checkpoint
marks a symbolic and practical step toward restoring freedom of movement and
reducing the atmosphere of fear that once dominated the area.
Crowded Streets Near Khalid ibn al‑Walid Mosque
In the city center, particularly
near the historic Khalid ibn al‑Walid Mosque in the Al‑Khaldiyeh
neighborhood, reporters documented unusual traffic congestion — a scene the
city had not witnessed for years. Previously, heavy security checkpoints in the
area restricted movement and created a sense of suffocation. Today, with those barriers
gone, the streets are once again filled with pedestrians and vehicles.
A City Rising Again
Although the road to full recovery
remains long, the visible return of residents, the reopening of markets, and
the removal of security barriers all signal a new chapter for Homs — a chapter
where life slowly reclaims a city once known as the “Capital of
the Syrian Revolution.”
Homs is beginning to breathe
again, rebuilding its identity and spirit after years of war and devastation.
